I would like to share the core qualities of a genuine leader. Understanding and developing them creates meaningful, sustainable growth.
Responsibility
A leader accepts responsibility for their life and for what happens within their area of influence. They do not habitually blame the government, the job, employees or neighbours for their problems. They recognise their agency and act on it.
Decision-making
A leader is prepared to make decisions for themselves and, where their role requires it, for the people they support or manage. They are also prepared to answer for those decisions. Sound decision-making is impossible without responsibility.
Initiative
A leader remains open to learning, exploration and new experience. They take an active role in the life of their team, initiate movement, launch ideas and create projects. Initiative is not merely personal motion: it helps other people move as well.
A visible presence
A leader does not dissolve into the crowd. At a meeting they contribute; at a conference they ask questions; in a working session they offer ideas and proposals. Their presence is visible in their conduct, communication and willingness to engage.
The ability to say no
A leader is a person with priorities, goals and commitments. If a request conflicts with those priorities or cannot be fulfilled responsibly, they can say no clearly and respectfully, without turning the answer into a defensive excuse.
Constructive thinking
A good leader maintains a constructive outlook. They accept responsibility for the final result and stay connected to colleagues and team members. Closing themselves off from others risks losing critical information and making a decision that harms the work or the project.
Awareness of emotional state
Empathy is the ability to understand the emotional state of another person or a group. People are constantly affected by emotions, and those emotions can strongly influence performance. A leader needs to recognise this factor and take it into account when moving towards a goal.
